13 Possible Signs of Chronic Kidney Disease: Are You at Risk?
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) can develop quietly. Many people have no noticeable symptoms until the condition becomes advanced.

The signs below do not prove that you have kidney disease. They can have many other causes, and blood and urine tests are needed to assess kidney health. If you have risk factors, do not wait for symptoms before asking about testing.

  1. Persistent Fatigue
Kidney disease can contribute to anemia and waste buildup, leaving you unusually tired or weak. Ongoing fatigue deserves assessment.
  2. 2. Foamy Urine
  3. Frequent, persistent foam may indicate protein in the urine. Occasional bubbles alone do not establish a kidney problem.
  4. 3. Blood in Your Urine
  5. Visible blood needs medical assessment. Kidney problems, urinary infections, and stones are among the possible causes.
  6. 4. More Frequent Urination
  7. Needing to urinate more often, particularly at night, can occur with kidney disease. Diabetes and prostate or bladder problems can also cause this change.
  8. 5. Swollen Feet, Ankles, or Hands
  9. Reduced removal of salt and fluid can cause swelling. Persistent orworsening swelling should be checked rather than attributed automatically to standing or aging. 6. Puffiness Around the Eyes
  10. Persistent puffiness may sometimes accompany protein loss through the kidneys. Allergies and other conditions can produce a similar appearance.
  11. 7. Dry, Itchy Skin
  12. Persistent itching can occur with advanced kidney disease. It is not specific to CKD, so the underlying cause needs investigation.
  13. 8. Repeated Muscle Cramps
  14. Changes in fluid and mineral balance may contribute to cramps. Do not start mineral supplements without advice if kidney disease is suspected.
  15. 9. Loss ofAppetite
  16. Advanced CKD can reduce your appetite. An ongoing loss of interest in food, especially with unintentional weight loss, warrants attention.
  17. 10. Nausea or Vomiting
  18. Waste accumulation in advanced disease may cause nausea or vomiting. These symptoms commonly have other causes and require assessment when persistent.
  19. 11. Trouble Sleeping
  20. Difficulty falling or staying asleep can occur with CKD. Sleep problems alone are not a reliable way to identify kidney disease.

12. Difficulty Concentrating
Advanced kidney disease may affect concentration. New or worsening difficulty thinking clearly should be discussed with ahealthcare professional.

13. Shortness of Breath
Breathlessness can occur with advanced CKD, including when fluid builds up. Heart and lung problems are other important possibilities. Sudden or severe breathing difficulty requires emergency care.

Who Is at Greater Risk?
Your risk is higher if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, or a family history of kidney disease. Risk also increases with age.

Having a risk factor does not mean you have CKD, but it is a reason to discuss testing—even when you feel well.

Which Tests Check Kidney Health? Two important tests provide complementary information:

Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR): A blood test that estimates how well your kidneys filter blood.
Urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (uACR): A urine test that checks for albumin, a protein that can leak into urine when kidneys are damaged.

Abnormal results may need repeat testing. A clinician should interpret them alongside your medical history and other findings.

When to Seek Help
Arrange a medical appointment for persistent changes in urination, unexplained swelling, or other worrying symptoms. Seek emergency care for chest pain or sudden, severebreathlessness.

Early assessment can identify the cause and guide treatment. A symptom checklist can raise awareness, but it cannot replace kidney testing.
