A new gel could let you regrow lost tooth enamel — it’s a permanent fix for tooth decay.

Developed by researchers at the University of Nottingham, this innovative, fluoride-free dental gel mimics the natural proteins that guide enamel formation during infancy. Unlike traditional treatments that merely strengthen remaining enamel, this gel acts as a microscopic scaffold that fills tiny cracks and pores.

Once applied, it naturally attracts calcium and phosphate ions from saliva to grow a new, highly organized mineral layer. This process, known as epitaxial mineralization, allows the regenerated tissue to seamlessly integrate with the tooth’s natural structure, recovering both its original architecture and physical strength.

The implications of this breakthrough are massive, especially for those suffering from painful tooth sensitivity or enamel wear. In rigorous testing, the regenerated enamel withstood simulated real-life stresses, including tooth brushing, chewing forces, and contact with acidic foods, behaving exactly like healthy, natural enamel. The research team has already co-founded a start-up, Mintech-Bio, with the goal of bringing their first clinical product to market as early as next year. This scalable technology could soon provide a non-invasive, restorative alternative to traditional fillings and varnishes worldwide.
