Welcome to the \u201cHoly crapoly, I have real-life memories from 20 years ago!\u201d club. It\u2019s a strangely disorienting milestone to reach when you find yourself starting sentences with, \u201cWhen I was young\u2026\u201d or, \u201cBack in my day\u2026\u201d isn\u2019t it? Your&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/gen-x-has-hit-that-stage-of-life-and-is-not-handling-it-very-well-ex1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gen X elders<\/a>&nbsp;have&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/someone-asked-what-s-the-most-gen-x-thing-ever-and-the-responses-were-awesome\/\">been here for a while<\/a>, but even we have moments of incredulously calculating how the heck we\u2019ve arrived at this place.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/why-time-speeds-up-as-we-age-ex1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Time<\/a>&nbsp;is a tricky little jokester, isn\u2019t it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To highlight how much has changed for middle-aged folks since we were young,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/AskReddit\/comments\/148n4l9\/people_born_before_1990_what_trivial_skill_do_you\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a user on Reddit asked people born before 1990<\/a>&nbsp;what&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/elder-millennials-discuss-the-major-differences-between-core-millennials\/\">useless skills they possess<\/a>&nbsp;that nobody has a need for anymore. It\u2019s both a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/07\/15\/1187647710\/why-do-we-feel-nostalgic-the-psychology-behind-it\">hilarious trip down memory lane<\/a>&nbsp;and a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/xennials-microgeneration-nostalgic-video\/\">time capsule of life pre-Y2K<\/a>. (Do kids these days even know what Y2K was? (They\u2019re probably Pinterest influencers now.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-maps-on-actual-paper\">Maps on actual paper<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI can re-fold a map correctly.\u201d \u2013&nbsp;<em><strong>JungleZac<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMan remember actually using maps\u2026I had an atlas with the road system in my car to navigate other states during road trips. Crazy.\u201d<em>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;<strong>jagua_haku<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How did we ever&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/life-before-gps-gen-z-ex1\">figure out how to get anywhere before GPS<\/a>&nbsp;and Google Maps? (Two-inch thick road atlases in our car and stopping at gas stations to buy local maps while traveling, that\u2019s how. Positively primitive.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Memorizing phone numbers and answering the house phone<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For real, though,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalfloss.com\/article\/65019\/15-things-kids-today-will-never-experience\">kids these days don\u2019t even know<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cRemembering phone numbers.\u201d&nbsp;<em>\u2013&nbsp;<strong>greatmilliondog<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNot only that, having to speak to your friend\u2019s parents for a few minutes when you call their house.\u201d<em>&nbsp;<\/em>\u2013&nbsp;<em><strong>Logical_Area_5552<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHow to take a message when the person they want to talk to isn\u2019t there.\u201d&nbsp;<em>\u2013&nbsp;<strong>Amoori_A_Splooge<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How about dialing on a rotary phone, using a pay phone and making (or taking) a collect call?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUsing your shoulder to hold a telephone up to your ear while doing multiple other things at once. Accidentally clotheslined Grandma She laughed about it but Mom was pissed!\u201d&nbsp;<em>\u2013&nbsp;<strong>AffectionateBite3827<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-recording-songs-off-the-radio-was-an-art-form\">Recording songs off the radio was an art form<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I don\u2019t think kids these days fully grasp&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/technology\/archive\/2023\/01\/mixtape-cassette-history-analog-music\/672780\/\">how revolutionary Spotify and the like<\/a>&nbsp;are for those of us who spent hours in front of the radio with our cassette tape recorder queued up at just the right spot waiting for the song we wanted to record to come on. And they will never, ever know the frustration of the DJ yapping right up until the lyrics start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/history\/the-rise-and-fall-of-the-mixtape-147757\/\">Record to tape from the radio<\/a>. Trying to make sure to not get the DJ\/presenter talking sh-t or an ad\u201d<em>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;<strong>Gankstajam<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018Shut up, shut up, shut up!!! I\u2019m trying to record my song!!!\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<em>\u2013<\/em><strong><em>tearsonurcheek<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHaving the first side be tempting enough that they\u2019d flip the other side to continue listening. That\u2019s before continual playback machines existed. Had to flip the cassette.\u201d&nbsp;<em>\u2013&nbsp;<strong>CrunchyTeaTime<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHaha yeah and trying to tell others so they don\u2019t make random noise or knock on the door.\u201d \u2013&nbsp;<strong><em>anonymous<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHow about making cassette-based mix tapes, trying to figure out to the second, how many and which types of songs in which order, that would still fit perfectly on the length of tape per side.\u201d \u2013&nbsp;<em><strong>anonymous<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople who make digital recordings do not have to worry about running out of tape.\u201d \u2013&nbsp;<em><strong>anonymous<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And there were many more, from rewinding a cassette tape with a pencil to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/cursive-alphabet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">writing in cursive<\/a>&nbsp;to tearing the sides off of printer paper without tearing the paper itself. (Oh and, of course, the ability to count out change and understand what you\u2019re supposed to do if something costs $9.91 and someone hands you $10.01.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gotta love it when the things that used to be totally normal now sound like historic artifacts found in a museum.
