And while there was some unfortunate boomer-bashing in the comments, some younger people tried to explain why the older folks have such a hard time regulating their emotions<\/u><\/a>: \u201cFrom conversations with my mother, they weren\u2019t allowed to make mistakes and were harshly punished if they did.\u201d The TikToker responded, \u201cA lot of people mentioned this, and it breaks my heart. I think you\u2019re right,\u201d Myexistentialdread responded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A follow-up video by YourTango<\/em> Editor Brian Sundholm<\/u><\/a> tried to explain boomer panic in an empathetic way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWell, it\u2019s likely that there actually was a reason the woman started panicking about a seemingly meaningless problem,\u201d Sundholm said. \u201cMost of us nowadays know the importance of recognizing and feeling our emotions.\u201d Sundholm then quoted therapist Mitzi Bachman, who says that when people bottle up their emotions and refuse to express them, it can result in an \u201cunhinged\u201d reaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n TikToker Gabi Day shared a similar phenomenon she noticed with her boomer mom; she called the behavior \u201canxiety-at-you.\u201d<\/u><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n Day\u2019s boomer mother was \u201creactive,\u201d \u201cnervous,\u201d and \u201canxious\u201d throughout her childhood. It\u2019s just a lot,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n It comes from a place of love but it is exhausting ??\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n There is a significant difference in emotional intelligence and regulation between how boomers were raised and how younger generations, such as Gen X, millennials, and Gen Z, were brought up. Boomers grew up when they had to bottle up their feelings to show their resilience<\/u><\/a>. This can lead to growing anger<\/u><\/a>, frustration with situations and people, chronic stress, and anxiety\u2014all conditions that can lead to panicky, unhinged behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ultimately, Sundholm says that we should sympathize with boomers who have difficulty regulating their emotions and see it as an example of the great strides subsequent generations have made in managing their mental health. \u201cIt may seem a little harsh to call something \u2018boomer panic,\u2019 but in the context of how many of them were raised, it makes a lot of sense,\u201d Sundholm says. \u201cIt also underlines the importance of emotional regulation skills and teaching them to future generations.
