{"id":6604,"date":"2026-03-17T19:38:50","date_gmt":"2026-03-17T19:38:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/humorsidehub.com\/?p=6604"},"modified":"2026-03-17T19:38:51","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T19:38:51","slug":"teacher-stirs-controversy-by-being-brutally-honest-with-students-about-their-reading-level","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/humorsidehub.com\/?p=6604","title":{"rendered":"Teacher stirs \u2018controversy\u2019 by being brutally honest with students about their reading level"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think some students need that in order to push themselves to actually try in school.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remember in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/american-teacher-describes-her-school-in-spain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">school<\/a>&nbsp;when the teacher would split the class into different reading groups? One was always, clearly, more advanced, while the other went at a slower pace. But the groups usually weren\u2019t labeled as such out loud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/retired-teacher-shares-common-parenting-mistake-ex1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">teacher<\/a>, at least, says maybe they should be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The results from 2024\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationsreportcard.gov\/reports\/reading\/2024\/g4_8\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">National Assessment of Educational Progress<\/a>&nbsp;found that the slide in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/education\/https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/teacher-reveals-the-really-obvious-reason-teens-no-longer-read-its-not-just-the-phones-ex1\">American students\u2019<\/a>&nbsp;reading abilities has only worsened. The percentage of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/8th-grade-teacher-reveals-the-wildest-things-she-s-heard-from-her-students\">&nbsp;8th graders<\/a>&nbsp;with \u201cbelow basic\u201d reading skills was 33%, the lowest in the exam\u2019s three-decade history. The percentage of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/fourth-grade-was-decades-ago-but-at-least-one-student-has-not-forgotten-him\">fourth graders<\/a>&nbsp;\u201cbelow basic\u201d was the largest in 20 years at 40%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur lowest performing students are reading at historically low levels,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/29\/us\/reading-skills-naep.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><u>said Peggy Carr<\/u><\/a>, commissioner of the National Center for Education Statistics, which administers the NAEP exam. \u201cWe need to stay focused in order to right this ship.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A big reason for the drop was the disruption in education caused by the height of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/tag\/covid\">COVID-19<\/a>&nbsp;pandemic, but educators are looking to see if there are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/forty-million-american-adults-are-functionally-illiterate-meet-the-woman-striving-to-help-them\">other causes<\/a>&nbsp;behind the drop in competency. \u201cThis is a major concern \u2014 a concern that can\u2019t be blamed solely on the pandemic,\u201d&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chalkbeat.org\/2025\/01\/29\/naep-reading-scores-decline-and-struggling-students-fall-behind\/#:\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><u>Carr said.<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;\u201cOur nation is facing complex challenges in reading.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alarmed by the drop in reading scores, a high school teacher named Amber, who goes by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@amber.mariee44?\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">@Amber.Maree44<\/a>&nbsp;on TikTok, is considering telling her students the grade level in which they read in hopes that it will motivate them and give them a reality check on their performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m starting to think that we need to be more straightforward with students about their progress and where they\u2019re at academically,\u201d Amber said. \u201cI think they need to know what grade level they\u2019re performing at.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amber\u2019s perspective may also be helpful to parents. A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.the74million.org\/article\/when-getting-good-grades-and-working-at-grade-level-are-not-the-same-thing\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><u>2023 study<\/u><\/a>&nbsp;revealed a significant gap between parents\u2019 perceptions of their child\u2019s performance and their actual standing compared to grade-level standards. Nearly nine out of ten parents thought their child was at grade level, while about half were below grade level nationally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m hesitant to do this because I know that we don\u2019t want students to feel bad about themselves, and I know that we don\u2019t want to discourage students by showing them their deficits. So I think, for a lot of students, having a real reality check like that where it\u2019s like, \u2018Hey, you\u2019re in high school. But it looks like you\u2019re reading at a fifth-grade level,\u2019 I think some students need that in order to push themselves to actually try in school,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/origin_787b5c.png\" alt=\"students, teachers grades, amber teacher, literacy rates, declining scores, american education\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amber\u2019s suggestion runs counter to some in education who believe that if children are told they are below grade level, it will&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/learningattheprimarypond.com\/blog\/3-reasons-why-i-dont-tell-my-students-their-reading-levels\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><u>discourage them from reading<\/u><\/a>. Students may not challenge themselves by attempting to read above their level, or they may become discouraged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This may further deter their progress, and it is far from an imperfect process to determine where a child is with their reading skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTo the people saying \u2018oh but only tell the parents\u2019 no, the kid needs to know. The parents can\u2019t read for them, or do the work for them. also some parents don\u2019t care, or don\u2019t get it,\u201d one person wrote in the comments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m a teacher. I did this for years, and I would tell my students iif you aren\u2019t at a level you\u2019re proud of, I want you to know it\u2019s NOT your fault. But if you choose not to fix it, it will be,\u2019\u201d another added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/origin_5b488a.png\" alt=\"students, teachers grades, amber teacher, literacy rates, declining scores, american educatio\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amber believes that a big reason why&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalliteracyinstitute.com\/2024-2025-literacy-statistics\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">54% of adults<\/a>&nbsp;cannot read at a fifth-grade level is that no one told them, so they don\u2019t know they need help improving their reading skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To combat the literacy crisis, Amber was considering having her students take an online literacy test to determine their grade level; she doesn\u2019t need to know the results because she already knows where they are from previous tests. Then, so no student feels singled out, she can have a dialogue with her students who have fallen behind about how they can improve their skills.
