On that same day, SES Chelsea had alerted beachgoers about a shark sighting in the vicinity.

In a Facebook post, they shared:

“We shared a post about a shark sighting, just off the beach, between Bonbeach and Chelsea. Later, we got a message from a family who follows our page, and they were at Carrum Beach earlier that morning.”

They went on to say:

“It was their little one’s first trip to the beach, and the gentleman’s partner took a few photos to capture the moment. When they returned home and reviewed the pictures, they spotted something in the shallow water, just behind them. Could this be our shark?”

The post quickly gained traction, with social media users split over what they observed.

One commenter noted: “It couldn’t be a very large one, considering the size of the dog and the water’s depth.”

Another person added: “It seems a bit shallow for a shark with a fin that large, especially considering the positions of the dog and the man on the left. Wouldn’t the other guy behind them have noticed it?”

And a third individual commented: “I agree that it shouldn’t be dismissed – but it’s very unlikely that a shark swimming in shallow waters would go unnoticed by those in the photo.”

Another theory

According to the Victoria Fisheries Authority (VFA), the unusual figure seen in the photo could not be verified by either Life Saving Victoria or the VFA.

However, Professor Charlie Huveneers, who leads the Southern Shark Ecology Group, provided a more practical explanation — he suggests that the “shark” was actually a stingray.

“The quality of the image makes it difficult to be sure,” he told Yahoo News Australia. “But based on the shape, it doesn’t resemble a shark’s dorsal fin. It’s more likely the wing of a Southern Eagle Ray, which are frequently spotted in shallow waters and along coastlines.”

The Southern Eagle Ray, which is regarded as near threatened, is found in the waters of southern Australia and can occasionally be seen around New Zealand too.

The unsettling revelation emerged just days following another shark sighting near Aldinga Beach, located south of Adelaide, where fishermen recorded a video of a gigantic great white swimming around their boat, estimated to be about 13 feet in length.

Since then, authorities have urged beachgoers to remain vigilant, as the discussion about what actually showed up in that family photo continues to generate intrigue — and chills — throughout Australia.

What began as a lovely family outing at the beach in Melbourne took a chilling twist when one family noticed something frightening lurking in the

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[3

post-6051","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news
https://humorsidehub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/644424652_950371447660606_9124585749858072810_n.jpg
["GET
