More than two decades ago, Pamela Gale Malhotra<\/strong> and her husband, Anil Malhotra<\/strong>, purchased abandoned farmland<\/strong> in southern India, land that had once been lush rainforest before deforestation stripped it bare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Determined to bring life back to the land, the couple began planting trees and protecting the area from further destruction. Over 26 years<\/strong>, their dedication transformed the desolate fields into a thriving forest once again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Located in the Western Ghats of Southern India<\/strong>, the SAI Sanctuary<\/strong> now spans over 300 acres<\/strong> of protected rainforest. The region is one of the world\u2019s biodiversity hotspots<\/strong>, recognized by the United Nations, and serves as the heart of the watershed<\/strong> for the entire South Indian Peninsula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n When the Malhotras first began in 1991<\/strong>, they started with just 55 acres<\/strong> of degraded land, abandoned rice paddies and overused coffee and cardamom fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWhen we first came here, most of the lands that were sold to us were abandoned\u201d, Pamela recalled. \u201cA lot of deforestation had taken place. It took a lot of care, energy, and years to bring it back.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Today, the sanctuary is home to over 200 globally endangered species<\/strong> of plants and animals, including Asian elephants<\/strong>, Bengal tigers<\/strong>, and countless birds, insects, and native plants. The forest has become a living ecosystem where every species plays a vital role<\/strong> in maintaining balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWe both feel a tremendous amount of joy when we walk through the sanctuary\u201d, Pamela said. \u201cI\u2019ve never felt this kind of joy in anything else I\u2019ve done in my life.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n As the trees returned, so did the insects. The insects nourished the soil, which allowed new growth to flourish.
