It is found naturally in foods such as nuts, seeds, beans, whole grains, and leafy green vegetables, and it is also available in dietary supplements and some medicines.

Order Vitamins

However, magnesium supplements are not automatically safe to combine with every medication. Magnesium can affect how certain medicines are absorbed, while some medications can also change magnesium levels in the body.

Order Vitamins

That is why anyone taking prescription or over-the-counter medication should check with a doctor or pharmacist before starting a magnesium supplement.

Magnesium and Antibiotics

One important interaction involves certain antibiotics.

Magnesium can bind to some antibiotics in the digestive tract and reduce how much of the medicine is absorbed. This includes certain tetracycline antibiotics, such as doxycycline, and quinolone antibiotics, such as ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin.

For some of these medicines, the NIH recommends separating the antibiotic and magnesium supplement by specific amounts of time. The exact timing depends on the medication, so the instructions from your doctor, pharmacist, or medication label should be followed.

Save on Rx

Do not simply stop an antibiotic because you are taking magnesium.

Magnesium and Osteoporosis Medications

Magnesium can also interfere with the absorption of certain oral bisphosphonates, medicines used to treat osteoporosis.

For example, magnesium-containing supplements or medicines can reduce absorption of oral alendronate when taken too close together. The NIH notes that separating magnesium from oral bisphosphonates by at least two hours can help minimize this interaction.

Because osteoporosis medications have specific administration instructions, always follow the directions provided with your medication.

Find Treatments

Magnesium and Diuretics

Diuretics, sometimes called “water pills,” can affect magnesium levels.

Some loop and thiazide diuretics can increase magnesium loss through urine, potentially contributing to lower magnesium levels. Other diuretics, such as potassium-sparing diuretics, can have the opposite effect and reduce magnesium loss.

This means the interaction isn’t simply a matter of avoiding magnesium altogether. Your individual medication and magnesium status matter.

Magnesium and Acid-Reflux Medicines

Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in many important functions in the body, including normal muscle and nerve function, blood pressure regulation, energy production, and

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[3

post-12535","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news
https://humorsidehub.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/11/864952988_122112712521505464_743719548973638492_n.jpg
["GET
