While people pleasers tend to abandon their wants and needs for others (such as saying yes when they want to say no), they also have many strengths and social skills that set them apart.

“People pleasing is not a personality flaw or a weakness,” Dr. Gary Dillon, PhD, a licensed psychologist and founder of Ally Psychological Therapy, told Upworthy.

He explained that people pleasing is an adaptive personality trait.

How people pleasing develops

“It is simply a response learned due to direct and indirect messages that being helpful, likeable, or agreeable is safer and more beneficial to the social companionship and love that we all seek in relationships,” he added.

People pleasing often develops in childhood as a defense mechanism for survival.

“As a child, we may intuitively know that we need to help our parents get their needs met before they will meet our basic needs,” Shari B. Kaplan, LCSW, founder and clinical director of Cannectd Wellness, told Upworthy. “Or sometimes it just means meeting their needs or a sibling’s needs so you can be emotionally or physically safe in the house,” she continued.

Hidden strengths of people pleasers

While people pleasing may come with downsides, it also comes with many strengths. Here are five hidden strengths that people-pleasers likely possess:

Hidden Strength #1: They are attuned to the needs and emotions of others

“People pleasers are extremely invested in attending to others and making them feel good,” said Dr. Dillon. “They tend to develop a spidey-sense of sorts and are highly attuned to the needs of people around them and the feelings that they have,” he added.

In turn, this gives people-pleasers a one-up on seeing others and attracting people to them.

“This sensitivity and awareness of cues, energy, and body language make them more supportive, attentive, empathetic, and thoughtful than most,” Dr. Dillon explained. “We tend to gravitate towards them instinctively because of how they make us feel,” he continued.

Hidden strength #2: They can see more than one perspective

“Many people pleasers instinctively consider how a decision or an interaction might affect someone else,” Kaplan said. “That ability to look beyond their own immediate experiences can support collaboration, creative problem-solving, and common ground. Strength becomes more sustainable when they include their own needs in the picture,” she added.

Hidden strength #3: They are collaborative

“People pleasers are motivated not to let others down, and this usually presents as strong follow-through, thorough preparation, flexibility, and a low ego,” Jessica Gordon, LCSW, psychotherapist and owner of JNG Therapy, told Upworthy. “These qualities make for great teammates, colleagues, partners, and friends—the type of person others feel confident they can count on. This kind of dependability and consistency builds trust, which is the foundation of any strong relationship or team,” she continued.

Hidden Strength #4: They are skilled at navigating relationships and conflict

Dr. Dillon explained that people pleasers work to avoid conflict and navigate relationships seamlessly.

“As such, they are attentive to connecting with us via common ground; they are often open-minded to differing perspectives and compromising,” he said. “They work to encourage collaboration and avoid disagreements in a way that makes us feel seen and heard. Since this is often experienced as pleasant, we lean into these relationships and want to connect and collaborate as much as possible,” Dr. Dillon added.

Hidden Strength #5: They are dependable

“People pleasers will never let you down. When they commit, they stick to it because they care about how their actions may impact you,” explained Dr. Dillon. “So we experience relationships with them as dependable, considerate, and valuable, and we feel like they are a part of the community or family that we are trying to create,” he concluded.

They are emotionally intelligent and attuned.
