He asked his manager for a single sick day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The request was denied. His boss then issued an ultimatum: he must bring in a formal doctor\u2019s note, or the absence would be marked unexcused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a July post on Reddit\u2019s r\/MaliciousCompliance, the server (posting as u\/yanni_lam4) explained the trap. The service industry is notorious for guilting sick employees and demanding notes from doctors they do not provide health insurance to see. The server had already been wearing a mask on his previous shifts, so being told to prove his illness felt like being called a liar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But his employer forgot he was still covered by his father\u2019s insurance, so the worker went to the doctor and had them write a note for four days off. He walked into work and handed it to his manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHere is my doctors note, and this is the date I will be back,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.upworthy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/09\/handing-doctors-note.png?w=1024\" alt=\"communication, skills, work\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.9212007504690432;width:1024px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few months later, they tried the same thing.
