had a building materials store in Tlalnepantla and had the habit of solving everything with clichés, as if male authority were a form of elegant laziness.

My brother Sergio was the practical pride of the house, the one who stayed in the business, the one who “never caused problems”, the one who knew how to smile at meals even though inside he kept track of every favor that he was later going to collect.

And my younger sister, Julieta, was always the fragile one, the luminous one, the one who asked for help with her eyes and managed to get everyone to organize the house around her needs.

I was the one who studied, worked, fulfilled my obligations, and paid my bills.

The reliable one.

The useful one.

<p really big from me.

That same afternoon I left the cafeteria with a firm decision in my chest, one of those decisions that are not born of the courage of the moment, but of an old intuition that is finally allowed to exist.

I didn’t go home.

I didn’t go to class="wp-block-paragraph">My parents’ house was the same and it wasn’t the same, as happens to places when one returns older than one’s memories: the green gate, the leaning orange tree, the entrance hall with chipped paint, the same rusty metal bell.

Touch.

Julieta opened the door,
